What we help with

If it plugs in and nobody can figure it out, we can help.

Ask anything you like. We'll explain what we're doing while we do it.

Wi-Fi that reaches the whole house

Dead spots, a router in the wrong place, a network nobody can get onto. We fix the coverage first, before anybody tells you to buy faster internet.

Computers that have gotten slow or strange

The machine that takes four minutes to start, the file that vanished, the update that won't finish. We sort those out and set up a backup while we're there.

Printers that won't print

It worked yesterday and today the computer can't find it. That's a common problem, it's not something you did, and we can fix it.

Phones and tablets, set up your way

Setting up a new one, moving everything across, photos, passwords, and making the text bigger without breaking anything.

TVs, streaming and “where did my channel go”

Getting a new TV going, tidying up the apps, and making the remote situation sane again. Then we show you the three buttons you need.

Learning it at your own pace

We'll slow down or write the steps out for you whenever you ask. Learning it once beats calling somebody every month.

Doorbells, cameras and smart home gear

Doorbells, cameras, speakers, thermostats and lights, set up so they notify the right phone and you can find them when you need them.

Scams, pop-ups and “is this email real?”

Pop-ups, fake warnings, emails that want you to click. We'll clear it out and show you what to look for so the next one doesn't get you.

Local to Lawrence

What tech help looks like around here.

Old West Lawrence and East Lawrence are hundred-year-old houses with plaster walls, and the Oread neighborhood next to campus is rentals that turn over every August, with the Wi-Fi set up in a hurry by whoever moved in. Out in west Lawrence the subdivisions are newer and bigger, which is its own Wi-Fi problem. Around Clinton and Perry lakes the first question is which internet service reaches the house at all.

We love making it easy

Patient, unhurried help, especially for the 55+ crowd.

A lot of people who retire in Lawrence spent their working lives at KU or the hospital and stayed for the town, and they'd like the new laptop explained, not just set up. We sit down, go at your pace, and write things down if you want them written down.

Questions

What people in Lawrence ask us.

Does somebody come out to Lawrence?

The ZIP check when you book answers that for your street: if a Local Nerd comes out to your address, the visit books at the rate shown. The list on this page marks every town a Local Nerd reaches today.

I'm in Ottawa or Tonganoxie. Is that too far?

No. Our service area is measured in miles from downtown Lawrence: Eudora, Baldwin City, Tonganoxie and Ottawa are inside the closest band, and Pomona, Williamsburg and Garnett are in the 25 to 50 mile band. This page lists every town by band.

I'm setting up a KU student's apartment. Can you help?

We help students the same as anybody else, at their own address, wherever the ZIP check shows a Local Nerd drives. We're not a campus IT service and we don't work inside KU's own systems.

How much does tech help cost in Lawrence?

Remote help is $39 for a 30-minute session, and that's what works in Lawrence today. When in-person visits open here, they'll be $110 an hour within 25 miles of downtown Lawrence, $130 in the 25 to 50 mile band and $145 from 50 to 75 miles, and the higher rate is how we pay for the drive. A $39 deposit will book an in-person visit, with the rest charged after your Local Nerd finishes and you sign off on the work. Nerd on Call membership is $14.99 a month and includes two remote sessions and an in-person visit a year, plus 20% off anything extra. You always agree to the rate before we start.

Do you help older adults in Lawrence with technology?

Yes. One-on-one help for older adults is work we like. We go at your pace, and we'll write the steps down for you to keep.

Do you fix broken devices, or just set things up?

We do. Most of what people call broken is a setting, an update, an account or a connection, and we fix those. Screens, batteries, parts and data recovery from a failed drive are somebody else's job, and we'll tell you that up front.
